Liene Vārpiņa is a dedicated member of the SAFETY FIRST team — where safety isn’t just a requirement, but a shared mindset and a core part of how the team operates every day.

With over five years of experience in occupational health and safety, Liene has contributed to a wide range of construction and industrial projects, including work in the healthcare and manufacturing sectors. Her key areas of expertise include accident investigation and the day-to-day management of workplace risks, helping teams go beyond basic compliance to develop a truly embedded safety culture.

🎓 Background and Expertise

Liene’s academic and professional journey reflects her passion for health, safety, and continuous improvement. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, with a focus on well-being, health promotion, and environmental health. She continued her studies with a Master of Science in Occupational Health and Expertise, gaining deeper knowledge in occupational health, sustainability, and risk assessment. To complement this, she completed a Master’s degree in Health Management, taking an international approach to system optimisation and strategic planning.

In addition to her academic achievements, Liene is a certified Quality Manager and Fire Safety Specialist. These certifications allow her to bring a structured, interdisciplinary approach to workplace health and safety, with a strong focus on quality systems and risk-based thinking.

🤝 Engaging with the Professional Community

Liene is also actively engaged in the professional community. She serves as a Board Member of the Latvian Quality Society, is a member of the Latvian Ergonomics Society, and is a committed supporter of the Public Health Association. These roles reflect her dedication to staying connected with innovation, current research, and the evolving challenges of workplace health — while also giving back to the field she’s passionate about.

🌿 Life Outside the Office

Outside of her professional role, Liene finds balance and inspiration through movement and time in nature. As she puts it:

“Summer, to me, means movement, freedom, and closeness to nature. I take every opportunity to be outdoors — rollerblading through city streets or forest trails, running early in the morning when the air is still fresh, paddleboarding or kayaking whenever the chance arises. Time spent in nature recharges me, calms me, and at the same time, inspires me. Alongside that, I stay loyal to the gym — strength training helps me maintain power, balance, and a focused mind. These are my moments for myself, when I can truly feel strength growing both physically and internally.”

Her connection to the outdoors and active lifestyle plays a vital role in how she shows up — focused, grounded, and ready to tackle challenges with clarity and determination.

Cornflowers are Liene's favourite flowers.

And yes – she absolutely loves cornflowers in the summer 💙 They’re a reminder of simplicity, beauty, and the natural rhythm of life — much like the role safety plays when it’s truly embedded in a workplace: quietly powerful, yet deeply impactful.

Two countries, 17 wind turbines and invaluable experience!

We are publishing the experience story of Richard Rullis, Senior Occupational Health and Safety Specialist at SIA SAFETY FIRST, about wind farm construction projects in Croatia and Germany!

Team strength and safety

The summer of 2024 was truly dynamic and challenging - working on wind farm construction projects in Croatia and Germany, I gained not only new knowledge but also valuable experience in an international environment.

For the second summer in a row I provided occupational safety supervision in wind farm construction, but this time I had the opportunity to expand my experience beyond the Baltic States and travel to Croatia and Germany. In each of these countries, one supervision project was successfully completed, with a total of 17 turbines installed.

Wind turbine installation is a complex and changing process, with each situation requiring an individual approach. Working in different climatic conditions, operating with international teams and high safety standards required continuous development of problem solving and decision making skills.

In these projects I worked with specialists from all over the world, from Europe to South America (my colleagues on sites came from Romania, Croatia, Denmark, Poland, Germany, Russia, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, the Netherlands, etc.). This experience not only helped to develop intercultural communication, but also gave me the opportunity to learn from other countries' best practices in occupational safety.

A safe working environment is not just a regulatory requirement - it is a shared responsibility. Working with different teams further reinforced the belief that cooperation, discipline and mutual trust are thekey factors for successful and safe project implementation.

With each project , not only the knowledge and professional competence grows , but also the confidence in the ability of the SAFETY FIRST team to deliver the highest safety standards throughout Europe and beyond. We currently have four experienced occupational safety specialists in our team who are actively involved in wind farm construction and service projects.
